The Witch of The Woods

I was lost. My secret venture into the nearby forest had quickly turned into a misadventure. It did not take me long to realize that I could not find my way back home.

It was getting dark and there was nothing in sight except the apparently endless array of trees. I could feel the mounting fear inside me as fatigue started to get the better of me. ‘I’ll be home soon,’ I kept convincing myself while walking aimlessly.

It was then that I started to hear a faint sound. ‘It is nothing. I’ll be home soon,’ I kept mumbling as I tried to calm myself. My feet froze and my heart began to beat faster. The sound got clearer, as I realized that it was made by leaves getting crunched by someone, or something. Though it could have been anything, just one thought clouded my mind; ‘The Witch of The Woods’. A chill ran down my spine and my heart sank as I could feel my hair slowly stand on their edge. My mouth went dry as I slowly turned around to see a woman at a distance.

‘The Witch, The Witch,’ I started to mumble as I could sense fear devour me. I had heard about her from almost everyone at the village and she aroused fear even among the bravest. They used to say that she was always hungry and that she abducted children and then devoured them whole to stay young forever!

I could feel myself tremble as she walked in my direction. I decided to run as fast as I could but I couldn’t move. My feet froze. I stood there silently. All I could do was to watch her approach me slowly. She was dressed in black, a hallmark for witches as I had been told. She was carrying a couple of sticks, one of which must be her broom and a few plants, to make potions I assumed.

Suddenly, I could move. I hid behind a tree and observed her to make sure she hadn’t seen me. It was when she got close to me, I could hear her whisper something or maybe she was just humming.

She went right past me while I hid behind the tree holding my mouth and trying my best not to make a sound. Luckily, she didn’t notice me. Maybe she was just some woman whom I mistook as a witch. Or she might really be a witch.

I kept observing her, not out of curiosity but out of fear. She was just far from me to barely distinguish her features when she turned back looked right back at me and started moving her lips as if saying something. To my horror, I could hear her, as if the winds carried her words straight to me. “Witches are not always hungry.” Then she gave me a wide smile, wider than any human ever could. A blink of an eye and she was gone!

The Valley of Peace

The watch showed 5.30 PM. It was a hot summer evening in Iraq. The sun was setting, painting the sky in an orange hue. And there I was, standing before the gates of a place like no other that I had ever visited. Only the dead have seen the end of war. That was the quote that came into my mind as I stood before the largest cemetery of the world. ' Wadi-al-salaam ' or ' The Valley of Peace ' as they call it! It was my unplanned visit to Baghdad and then to Najaf that had finally brought me there. Ever since my childhood, after I came to know about that place, I had a curiosity about visiting it someday. If you look up for images of that place on the internet, you would fail to think of it as a graveyard at the first glimpse. I felt like it was a huge city with millions of houses lying in close proximity. There are in fact around 5 million graves there but that city has no living members. It is at the second glimpse that you notice the beauty of it; which I think would be ...

Breaking News

Jesse had a nightmare. She woke up sweating. She was paralyzed. The attacks of sleep paralysis had been getting worse over the past few weeks. Taking medications had helped her with the panic attacks though. She now lied there, her body paralyzed and her mind gripped with fear. Her therapist had advised her to think of things she liked when she was in such a state. So, she thought of how she had met the love of her life, Michael. She thought of how he had changed her after they met. It was not long before they were married and she thought of it. But with it came the thought of how things had changed between them over the past few years. And that they had decided to get divorced. Growing up in an orphanage, it was not easy for Jesse. Michael was the probably the first person who felt like family. And so, being separated from the love of her life had left a lasting impression on her. She had gotten heartbroken, depressed and delusional. Not that she was a weak woman, but she had nev...

The Cure

It all started as a notion of just a normal flu virus in Asia but it didn’t take long spread to the whole world and turn into a deadly pandemic. It was quick.   They say it drained the life out of you and once you were infected with it, it was just a matter of days before you turn into a corpse. There was no cure.   Everything was completely shut down. No one was safe. With each passing day, the situation got grimmer and people started to get more and more frustrated and less hopeful. I would wake up every morning hoping that things would get better with time. But it started to feel like I have been hoping since eternity.   The atmosphere started to smell of death, decay and of the grim future we were headed to. Rumors are they were running short of spaces to bury the bodies and dead bodies were piling up faster with every passing day. It was hard to see a single soul on the streets. Everyone tried their best to prevent it from spreading but to no use. It was in t...
