Jesse had a nightmare. She woke up sweating. She was paralyzed.
The attacks of sleep paralysis had been getting worse over the past few weeks. Taking medications had helped her with the panic attacks though.
She now lied there, her body paralyzed and her mind gripped with fear. Her therapist had advised her to think of things she liked when she was in such a state. So, she thought of how she had met the love of her life, Michael. She thought of how he had changed her after they met. It was not long before they were married and she thought of it.
But with it came the thought of how things had changed between them over the past few years. And that they had decided to get divorced. Growing up in an orphanage, it was not easy for Jesse. Michael was the probably the first person who felt like family. And so, being separated from the love of her life had left a lasting impression on her. She had gotten heartbroken, depressed and delusional.
Not that she was a weak woman, but she had never had someone to call her own and it was hard to let go of the only person who felt like home. Tears came rolling down her eyes when she remembered the last time she had met Michael. It was then that she realized her paralysis has resolved. She could finally get some sleep now. She turned to her side, moved her hands over the side of the bed where Michael usually slept. To her amaze, she was able to feel the warmth and a slight silhouette indicating that someone might have been sleeping there.
‘Strange’, she said feeling the warmth over her hands, which somehow brought her solace. While she was still embracing it, she heard a sound.
She quickly got up and then tried to locate where the sound was coming from. It felt as if it was coming from the kitchen. She slowly tiptoed towards the kitchen trying not to make any noise. Her heart started to pound fast and she felt a sharp pain arise in her head. Her hands and feet began to shake as she slowly opened the kitchen door.
But to her relief, it was just her wind chime making noise as the wind blew through the open window. ‘I must have left it open while cleaning the dishes,’ she said to herself, trying to convince her that it was nothing but a silly misunderstanding.
Just then, she heard a noise from her bedroom. She tried to peek through the hallway and saw a shadow move around. She got anxious and quickly picked up the knife from the shelf. She wiped sweat off her forehead and began walking slowly towards her bedroom. When she entered her bedroom, her eyes became wide at the sight she saw.
A dark shadow stood tall, facing towards the window. She wanted to scream, to make noise, something that could get her help. But it felt as if her voice had sunken deep into her stomach. She could hardly utter a word which were barely audible to her. She gripped the knife tightly with both her hands and extended it towards the shadow.
‘Hey….you……’ she spoke, with noticeable fear in her voice. The shadow turned towards her quickly. It was so dark that she could barely make out the face. All she could notice was a tall, manly figure with big eyes staring at her through the darkness. The shadow didn’t seem to be alarmed at all. It stood there for a moment and then extended a hand towards her.
‘Don’t move...I am armed…’ she said, swinging the knife in air. The shadow took back the extended hand and then took a step further towards her.
‘I am warning you….. if…..if…. you take one step more, I’ll…. stab you…’ she warned while taking a step back. The shadow stood there for a second and then tried to grab her arm.
It was then that she lost control over herself and fear overtook her instincts. She freed her hand from the shadow and then made several blows towards the shadow with her knife. With each blow, she felt the knife penetrating flesh and blood came spurting out. The shadow felt human. Still it made no noise. She stabbed it till it stopped moving and fell dead to the floor. She finally heaved a sigh of relief. Throwing the knife to the floor, she fell on the bed unconscious.
