It all started as a notion of just a normal flu virus in Asia
but it didn’t take long spread to the whole world and turn into a deadly
pandemic. It was quick.
They say it drained the life out of you and once you were
infected with it, it was just a matter of days before you turn into a corpse.
There was no cure.
Everything was completely shut down. No one was safe. With
each passing day, the situation got grimmer and people started to get more and
more frustrated and less hopeful. I would wake up every morning hoping that
things would get better with time. But it started to feel like I have been
hoping since eternity.
The atmosphere started to smell of death, decay and of the
grim future we were headed to. Rumors are they were running short of spaces to
bury the bodies and dead bodies were piling up faster with every passing day.
It was hard to see a single soul on the streets. Everyone
tried their best to prevent it from spreading but to no use. It was in the air,
the water, the soil; everywhere.
Then came the famine. With no food, things started to get
worse. Malls were getting looted and people could barely feed themselves once a
day. With this, people started to take out their frustration on doctors and
government. Some vigilantes attacked hospitals and government buildings.
This started ‘The Revolution’. People broke down all
government restrictions and social norms and there was a total breakdown of the
society. It felt like Hell envisaged on Earth. Even Death seemed to be a better
option to some people.
The government tried its best to restore law and order while
still battling with the virus. Then came
the breakthrough; with so many hungry mouths to feed and so many patients to
cure, the government finally found ‘The Cure’.
After staying years inside our homes, we could finally have
our freedom if we just took ‘The Cure’.
And today is my day. I get dressed, after all this is a day
to remember, and I walk out of my house as the officials call out for me.
I open the door to feel the wind blow against my face. I
close my eyes and take a deep breath, knowing that finally there will be an end
to all this.
‘Mr. Saunders?’, a voice called out.
‘Yes, that is me.’
‘Are you ready for ‘The Cure’?’
‘I’ve been waiting since long.’
‘This might hurt a bit but you will be just fine.’ the
officer spoke holding the cure.
I took a deep breath.
‘Freedom at last!’ I said closing my eyes as the officer
pulled the trigger.
