The Voice in My Head

“He is getting close,” the voice spoke.
I tried to drive as fast as I could. I could not afford to slow down.
People didn’t believe me. But I knew the voice was real.
It had started since childhood or maybe it had been with me since birth. It was the answer to my prayers. I just had to close my eyes and call for it and it popped up to tell me whatever I wanted to know. “You will have to pay for it eventually.” It would speak before granting me what I wished to know.
It was fun as a kid. It was like a kind of toy, an object of amusement. I used to play with it day and night.
“You know you cannot run anymore.” The voice said before bursting into a laughter. “Ugh, just shut up and let me focus.” I said glancing back and forth, my eyes constantly scanning and trying to grasp the surroundings.
I never really hoped that I will have to pay for it one day. Or maybe the luxuries it afforded made me forget about it. I realized its potential during my teenage years. It was like a weapon; but unlike any other. I used it to my advantage whenever I wanted something. Wealth, fame, success, everything!
But it came to me tonight as a chafferer of death. “Time for payment now. You will die tonight and the Devil is coming to take you.” It spoke as a chill ran down my spine. “No, it can’t be.” I argued in vain.
All I could see now were lights flashing by on the other side of the road as my vision started to get hazy. It felt like everything was coming to an end, all the more with the voice laughing inside of my head. “Just stop it please. Tell me what will you take to stop?”
“Look back, the Devil has almost got you.” It spoke as my hair stood on their edge and my limbs started to go limp. There was a sort of charm to it. After all, who would not want to have a look at terror itself. The thought of glancing at humanities’ greatest fear impersonated made me curious. Curious enough to glance back. After all, I knew the voice could never be wrong. So, I glanced back.
That is when I heard a loud horn followed by a crash as everything turned black!

The Valley of Peace

The watch showed 5.30 PM. It was a hot summer evening in Iraq. The sun was setting, painting the sky in an orange hue. And there I was, standing before the gates of a place like no other that I had ever visited. Only the dead have seen the end of war. That was the quote that came into my mind as I stood before the largest cemetery of the world. ' Wadi-al-salaam ' or ' The Valley of Peace ' as they call it! It was my unplanned visit to Baghdad and then to Najaf that had finally brought me there. Ever since my childhood, after I came to know about that place, I had a curiosity about visiting it someday. If you look up for images of that place on the internet, you would fail to think of it as a graveyard at the first glimpse. I felt like it was a huge city with millions of houses lying in close proximity. There are in fact around 5 million graves there but that city has no living members. It is at the second glimpse that you notice the beauty of it; which I think would be ...

Breaking News

Jesse had a nightmare. She woke up sweating. She was paralyzed. The attacks of sleep paralysis had been getting worse over the past few weeks. Taking medications had helped her with the panic attacks though. She now lied there, her body paralyzed and her mind gripped with fear. Her therapist had advised her to think of things she liked when she was in such a state. So, she thought of how she had met the love of her life, Michael. She thought of how he had changed her after they met. It was not long before they were married and she thought of it. But with it came the thought of how things had changed between them over the past few years. And that they had decided to get divorced. Growing up in an orphanage, it was not easy for Jesse. Michael was the probably the first person who felt like family. And so, being separated from the love of her life had left a lasting impression on her. She had gotten heartbroken, depressed and delusional. Not that she was a weak woman, but she had nev...

The Cure

It all started as a notion of just a normal flu virus in Asia but it didn’t take long spread to the whole world and turn into a deadly pandemic. It was quick.   They say it drained the life out of you and once you were infected with it, it was just a matter of days before you turn into a corpse. There was no cure.   Everything was completely shut down. No one was safe. With each passing day, the situation got grimmer and people started to get more and more frustrated and less hopeful. I would wake up every morning hoping that things would get better with time. But it started to feel like I have been hoping since eternity.   The atmosphere started to smell of death, decay and of the grim future we were headed to. Rumors are they were running short of spaces to bury the bodies and dead bodies were piling up faster with every passing day. It was hard to see a single soul on the streets. Everyone tried their best to prevent it from spreading but to no use. It was in t...
