The Voice in My Head

“He is getting close,” the voice spoke.
I tried to drive as fast as I could. I could not afford to slow down.
People didn’t believe me. But I knew the voice was real.
It had started since childhood or maybe it had been with me since birth. It was the answer to my prayers. I just had to close my eyes and call for it and it popped up to tell me whatever I wanted to know. “You will have to pay for it eventually.” It would speak before granting me what I wished to know.
It was fun as a kid. It was like a kind of toy, an object of amusement. I used to play with it day and night.
“You know you cannot run anymore.” The voice said before bursting into a laughter. “Ugh, just shut up and let me focus.” I said glancing back and forth, my eyes constantly scanning and trying to grasp the surroundings.
I never really hoped that I will have to pay for it one day. Or maybe the luxuries it afforded made me forget about it. I realized its potential during my teenage years. It was like a weapon; but unlike any other. I used it to my advantage whenever I wanted something. Wealth, fame, success, everything!
But it came to me tonight as a chafferer of death. “Time for payment now. You will die tonight and the Devil is coming to take you.” It spoke as a chill ran down my spine. “No, it can’t be.” I argued in vain.
All I could see now were lights flashing by on the other side of the road as my vision started to get hazy. It felt like everything was coming to an end, all the more with the voice laughing inside of my head. “Just stop it please. Tell me what will you take to stop?”
“Look back, the Devil has almost got you.” It spoke as my hair stood on their edge and my limbs started to go limp. There was a sort of charm to it. After all, who would not want to have a look at terror itself. The thought of glancing at humanities’ greatest fear impersonated made me curious. Curious enough to glance back. After all, I knew the voice could never be wrong. So, I glanced back.
That is when I heard a loud horn followed by a crash as everything turned black!

The Witch of The Woods

I was lost. My secret venture into the nearby forest had quickly turned into a misadventure. It did not take me long to realize that I could not find my way back home. It was getting dark and there was nothing in sight except the apparently endless array of trees. I could feel the mounting fear inside me as fatigue started to get the better of me. ‘I’ll be home soon,’ I kept convincing myself while walking aimlessly. It was then that I started to hear a faint sound. ‘It is nothing. I’ll be home soon,’ I kept mumbling as I tried to calm myself. My feet froze and my heart began to beat faster. The sound got clearer, as I realized that it was made by leaves getting crunched by someone, or something. Though it could have been anything, just one thought clouded my mind; ‘The Witch of The Woods’. A chill ran down my spine and my heart sank as I could feel my hair slowly stand on their edge. My mouth went dry as I slowly turned around to see a woman at a distance. ‘The Witch, The Witch,...

Jesse had a nightmare. She woke up sweating. She was paralyzed. The attacks of sleep paralysis had been getting worse over the past few weeks. Taking medications had helped her with the panic attacks though. She now lied there, her body paralyzed and her mind gripped with fear. Her therapist had advised her to think of things she liked when she was in such a state. So, she thought of how she had met the love of her life, Michael. She thought of how he had changed her after they met. It was not long before they were married and she thought of it. But with it came the thought of how things had changed between them over the past few years. And that they had decided to get divorced. Growing up in an orphanage, it was not easy for Jesse. Michael was the probably the first person who felt like family. And so, being separated from the love of her life had left a lasting impression on her. She had gotten heartbroken, depressed and delusional. Not that she was a weak woman, but she had nev...

"Emily!?"

Background Photo of the Mansion by Lucas Allmann from Pexels “Hey, watch that brother! Just don’t get us killed.” I yelled as the truck barely escaped colliding with a car approaching us from the opposite direction. After sighing a bit of relief, I further added “Are you out of your god-damn mind, Jeffrey! Are you high? And God save us if we get pulled up by some fucking cop for crossing the speed limit!” “Just don’t worry so much man! I know how to drive. And you better thank me for bringing you here with me or else you would be with your old woman right now.” replied Jeffrey in a peculiar tone which always made me uncomfortable. Even after being his friend for too long I couldn’t get used to his tone and his unpredictable nature. At times, he was so calm enough as if all the tranquility of the sea was transformed into him and at times he was so fierce, just like a wild animal. We have been friends since a long time and I have had many experiences with him. Still I coul...
